Steven M. Paul is a Group Vice President at Eli Lilly and Company.  In his current position, Dr. Paul oversees Therapeutic Area Discovery Research and Clinical Investigation, which includes preclinical research, toxicology, chemistry, and decision-phase medical research of the Lilly Research Laboratories.  His own research activities have centered on the role neurotransmitter receptors play in mediating the actions of various neuroactive drugs including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, neuroactive steroids, and alcohol.  Today, Dr. Paul is engaged in the development of new therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Paul previously served as Scientific Director of the Intramural Research Program at the National Institute of Mental Health, a component of the National Institutes of Health.  He is the recipient of numerous honors, including the A.E. Bennett Award of the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the Distinguished Service Medal of the USPHS, and the Daniel H. Efron Award of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
